A PRODUÇÃO DE SOJA EM PEQUENAS PROPRIEDADES FAMILIARES NA REGIÃO DAS MISSÕES/RS AgEcon
Wesz Junior, Valdemar Joao; Bueno, Viviane Do Nascimento.

A PROPOSAL FOR EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AgEcon
Wilson, Maurice.
The paper examines the performance of the agricultural sector over the 10 year period 1995-2004. Indicators suggest that investments in Agricultural Research and Development (used as a proxy for the quantum of technology generated) have had little impact on agricultural production. In this regard, an assumption is made that technology generated has neither been adequately transferred nor adopted. Within the above context a holistic model for effective technology generation has been presented. It is argued that effective technology generation is market driven technology is more likely to be transferred and adopted by agribusiness entities. To implement this process, strategic alliances should be forged in order to address resource limitations. The entire...

AGRICULTURAL TRADE AND THE DOHA ROUND: LESSONS FROM COMMODITY STUDIES AgEcon
Beghin, John C.; Aksoy, Ataman.
While global analytical approaches to agricultural trade liberalization yield large gains for most economies, there are substantial variations in the policy regimes across commodities. To clarify the multiplicity of distortions and impacts, the World Bank's Trade Department undertook a series of commodity studies. The studies highlight the important challenges faced by negotiating countries in the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) trade negotiations. The studies provide a sharper look at the North-South dimensions of the agricultural trade debate, with the North's trade barriers, domestic support, and tariff escalation. They also underscore the South-South challenges on border protection and the reduced rural income opportunities for the...

ALBERTA AGRICULTURE AND FOOD TRADE: RECENT TRENDS AgEcon
Rosario, Joe A..
Exports have been an integral and essential feature of the agriculture and food industry in Alberta. This is a product of the province’s relatively low population and consumption base on the demand side juxtaposed with a large resource base of prime agriculture land for crop production and an abundance of range and pasture for grazing and forage for raising livestock on the supply side. A host of factors influence the disposition of surplus production or exports including global supply/demand balances, relative cost/price relations, structural changes through farm consolidation and scale economies, market access, exchange rates, sanitary and phyto‐sanitary standards and regulations, disease and pest related issues. The inherent nature of agriculture means...

ALBERTA AND THE EU-27: PAST TRADE RELATIONS AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Emter, Nicholas A.; Mirus, Rolf.
Canada and the EU-27 are negotiating a comprehensive economic partnership agreement against the backdrop of the stalled multilateral negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The new agreement is expected to stimulate trade, investment, and technology transfer between the two partners. This report provides a review of the last 15 years of Alberta’s experience in exporting goods to the EU-27, with the goal of gaining insights into how freer trade could affect future exports to the region. First, we summarize the state of bilateral economic relations between the prospective partners, relying in part on a study jointly sponsored by the EU and the Government of Canada. The second part focuses on the exports to the EU from Alberta...

APLICAÇÃO DO MODELO ARIMA À PREVISÃO DO PREÇO DAS COMMODITIES AGRÍCOLAS BRASILEIRAS AgEcon
Pinto, Pablo Aurelio Lacerda De Almeida; Pereira, Elenildes Santana; Oliveira, Marianne Costa; Santos, Jose Marcio Dos; Maia, Sinezio Fernandes.

Identification of the B, Q, and native Brazilian biotypes of the Bemisia tabaci species complex using Scar markers PAB
Queiroz,Paulo Roberto; Martins,Erica Soares; Klautau,Nazaré; Lima,Luzia; Praça,Lilian; Monnerat,Rose Gomes.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop sequence-characterized amplified region (Scar) markers to identify the B, Q, and native Brazilian biotypes of the sweet potato whitefly [Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)]. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) amplification products, exclusive to the B and Brazilian biotypes, were selected after the analysis of 12,000 samples, in order to design a specific Scar primer set. The BT-B1 and BT-B3 Scar markers, used to detect the B biotype, produced PCR fragments of 850 and 582 bp, respectively. The BT-BR1 Scar marker, used to identify the Brazilian biotype, produced a PCR fragment of 700 bp. The Scar markers were tested against the Q biotype, and a flowchart was proposed to indicate the decision...

International Agricultural Baseline Projections to 2007 AgEcon
Landes, Rip; Westcott, Paul C.; Wainio, John.
This report provides baseline projections for international supply, demand, and trade for major agricultural commodities to 2007. It is a companion report to USDA Agricultural Baseline Projections, providing the foreign country details supporting those projections. Projections of strong global economic growth, particularly in developing countries, combined with more open foreign markets and the emergence of China as a major bulk commodity importer, support strong projected gains in U.S. farm exports. The value of total U.S. agricultural exports is projected to rise from a record $57.3 billion in FY 1997 to nearly $85 billion in 2007. The projections were completed based on information available as of December 1997, and reflect a composite of model results...

International Commodity Organizations and Governance of Global Value Chains AgEcon
Burger, Kees; Daviron, Benoit; Flores, Vanessa.
International commodity Organizations can play a role in reducing transaction costs between producer and consumer. The current organisations do this partly through statistics and collecting and disseminating market information, undertaking projects and convening meetings. Of a traditional focus on the international part of the trade chain they must extend to the whole chain, until the natural resources on the producer side and treatment of waste on the consumer side. This requires more capacity, stronger mandate and more intensive cooperation for the organisations mutually and with UNCTAD, FAO and the World Bank. The representatives of the governments now play the role of administrators and representatives of the industry. They should be customers, guard...

Bracco, Salvatore; Riccardi, Giancarlo.
International trade has increased, in the last few decades, however the economic divide between the advanced economies in the North of the world and the less developed of the South has increased. In the current state of affairs, characterised by the increasing integration between the commodities and service sector, capital and labour sector and the financial markets, diverse initiatives are arising in developed countries, aimed at supporting developing countries, under the impulse from a civic society increasingly concerned about the problems that trouble them. These initiatives, which most importantly include the Fairtrade and the Ethical Finance movements, excel the welfarism that has shaped the policies of the developed countries, and promote ways of...

Braganca, Raissa Carvalho; Bueno, Newton Paulo.
The purpose of the paper was to study if the dynamics of the Brazilian cattle stocks can be better explained by systemic endogenous factors or either by exogenous changes on beef demand. The conclusion, as proposed by the theory of the cattle cycle, was that systemic factors related to the adoption of the stabilization program in 1994 were apparently more important in explaining the stagnation of the Brazilian herd since 2000. The main policy implication of this conclusion is that it seems to have a space for stabilizing de dynamics of the system through adequate public policies. The methodology used was system dynamics which allows to trace the critical feedback loops that drive de cattle cycle and to identify possible leverage points in the system,...

PRESENCE OF ASPERGILLUS AND OTHER FUNGAL SYMBIONTS IN COFFEE BEANS FROM COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
GAMBOA-GAITÁN,MIGUEL ÁNGEL.
Fungi are common inhabitants of plants and plant-derived products. Some of these fungal species are potentially dangerous to human health since they are able to produce chemical substances that alter normal physiological activity. There are no studies about natural mycoflora associated with coffee beans in Colombia, and nothing is known about the presence and abundance of toxigenic fungal species in Colombian coffee. In this study 5,000 coffee beans were studied by plating them on potato-based artificial culture medium and it was shown that potentially toxigenic fungal taxa (mostly from genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium), are currently found in Colombian coffee beans. This is true for all steps of coffee processing, from berries in trees to toasted...

Previsibilidade e eficiência no mercado agrícola Ciência Rural
Righi,Marcelo Brutti; Ceretta,Paulo Sergio.

Vegro, Celso Luis Rodrigues; Pino, Francisco Alberto; Moricochi, Luiz; Nogueira Junior, Sebastiao.
In despite of the several advantages for exporting ground and roasted coffee instead of green coffee, namely employment and value gains, there are many limitations to the private efforts. Effective attempts have been discouraged by large and stable national market, high risks associated to the international market, and a frightening bureaucracy. Even so, some progress has been reported in recent years as is shown in this paper, based on interviews with Brazilian export agents, industries and cooperatives. Some restrictions are inherent to the enterprises, such as managerial questions and innovation aptitude, while others are systemic. Suggestions to improve processed coffee exports are presented.

Returns in Commodities Futures Markets and Financial Speculation: A Multivariate GARCH Approach AgEcon
Manera, Matteo; Nicolini, Marcella; Vignati, Ilaria.
This paper analyses futures prices for four energy commodities (light sweet crude oil, heating oil, gasoline and natural gas) and five agricultural commodities (corn, oats, soybean oil, soybeans and wheat), over the period 1986-2010. Using CCC and DCC multivariate GARCH models, we find that financial speculation is poorly significant in modelling returns in commodities futures while macroeconomic factors help explaining returns in commodities futures. Moreover, spillovers between commodities are present and the conditional correlations among commodities are high and time-varying.
